The best thing to do is get a really good book on working out. Something like "Starting Strength" or "The New Rules of Lifiting for Women." Both of these books have a wealth of good information on how to do various exercises, and more importantly WHY to do them.Check out some of the exercise forums out there. The one at menshealth.com is a good site, with plenty of good people to help with your exercise and diet questions.
Protein shakes are good if you are doing strength training exercises. Just buy the cheapest whey protein powder (by cheapest, I mean lowest cost per gram of protein in the container. Multiply the number of servings by the number of grams of protein per serving; and divide the price of the container by that). Drink one shake directly after your strength training workout.
