What you should do is ask a high school football coach

Answer #2:

At 14, and being that you're already 5'10, that leads me to believe you may still be growing. I'd strongly suggest light weights. Nothing too heavy as you will stunt your growth. And even if you want to stop growing, it can have negative affect on your posture. However, you can start working out. Stay off of any supplements until you're at least 20-21 years old. You don't need anything. Not even protein. Just eat foods higher in protein, like meat and beans. Again, don't work out with too much weight, but do work hard. You'll find your comfort level. Your body will develop fast and also recover fast. Also important, is the diet. You didn't mention how much you weight. If you're overweight, then your diet is imperative. Stay away from pastas, soda, chips, milk based ice creams and most especially fast food. Don't eat fast food at all.

Hit the gym, or the school gym. Work opposites is a good way to start. Chest and back one day, biceps and triceps the next. For chest do bench with weight that you can do at least 10 times and without a spotter. For your back, at you age, just use machines and cables. Next day do biceps and triceps. For bi's do barbell curls, and dumbell curls. Triceps do machines, and overhead with a barbell. Next day hit you legs. Light and I mean go easy, on the squats. Especially at first. Do some leg presses, leg extensions and hamstring curls. Don't neglect your legs. Ever. It has an impact on the results of your upper body. You also must squeeze in cardio. Espcecially if your overweight and/or have slow metabolism. Treadmill, bike and eliptical will get the job done. Rotate your days, mix it up and ask for advice in the gym. Make sure you state your age. Experienced body builders will always be cautious with age.

Another important workout and will make your definition come real quick is your basics. Push ups, pull ups, abs crunchs and leg lifts.

Once you start seeing results and getting stronger, you'll be tempted to take supplements and lift heavy. Don't. It's not worth it. You're time will come. You don't need that stuff now anyway.

Good luck.
